Re: What is your dream job?

      1. Did 4 years of 2 completely different majors, Agronomy (Biochemistry) and Telecommunications...didn't like it, so I quit...I have always worked on ISPs (except here in the US) and I've always enjoyed it, so I guess I'd be happy with being Manager of Customer Services or Training.

      2. Unfortunately I haven't figured out what's my thing yet...hehehe...I like a little bit of everything, but I guess my dream job would be one that would allow me to live in different countries from time to time...just like what I'm doing now (not exactly the right job, but it is taking me to different places in the world).

I wish someone would pay me to procrastinate. That would be a dream job. And I think I'd be very good at it.

An artist is not feasible because it is not practical in this modern day. You get to live on an income of rocks and leaves and what's the point? I would have to sell work to survive. If I go into illustration there is no point anyway, almost everything is done by computers, so the demand for that skill that was by the hand that required talent is no more for the most part.

A professor is not feasible because it is a saturated market. I only have to remember to my days at UCLA when I saw all these mid 30s people clogged in the history, econ and poli sci departments waiting for jobs and working as TAs waiting for one of those old white haired half dead professors with tenure to die with one leg in the coffin already. That's the thing. If I pursued a PhD., I'd have to end up teaching at some podunk university in say, Montana. Most of the professors I knew started off somewhere uncool and did not end up working in the places they wanted until well late into their life or some were just unlucky. There are people in line, you know. Either way, it's not worth the effort.

Re: What is your dream job?

I don't think it's that bad Anon. It's true that it's nearly impossible to get a position at the major research universities right out of school, but there are positions elsewhere. I'm assuming it's similar with law schools... but with the most prestigious schools instead. At least in psych, I haven't seen TAs in their 30s waiting for positions. For us, either we need to have a very impressive publication history as grad students, land an awesome post-doc and do great work, or work somewhere else first. I'd be happy to go back to my undergrad institution when I'm done. It's more teaching oriented, but either I'll be content there and stay, or I'll get some more research under my belt, get a nice grant, and transfer out. That's my plan.

Anyway, my dream job is being a professor. I love to do research, but that's part of the deal in most places, so I'm not listing it seperately.

I don't have an unobtainable dream job. If I could incur, by some stroke of luck, a large sum of money, that would be fantastic, but I would continue to do the same thing and at most, just be less pressured to produce.
