          Re: Andre Agassi, not Armenian!???

Agassi's father is hye, his mother is not. As far as his personal feelings are concerned he has been conspicuously silent about his hyness. It is not his fault. He may have had an upbringing "away" from things armenian. Unlike Prost, former formula one racing champion, whose mother is armenian, and his father french, who proudly proclaims his hyness when asked about it or Nalbandian who equally acknowledges loudly his armenian background, Agassi remains disconcertingly mute on the subject. However, we shoud make allowances, I don't know nor pretend to know how he deports himself in his private life. He could be a staunch hye in the four walls of his mansion. I am not aware of any significant donations or grants that he might have given the Armenian sport federation for the propagation of tenis in Armenia. If he could build a dozen indoor arenas and other facilities in the mother country it will speak volumes about his sentiments. Many hyer hide their origins , in the celebrity stakes, for reasons who they themselves only know.

I didnt read the whole thread but Agassi said himself on Larry King that hes Armenian.
Ill try to find the clip on youtube, but if you google Andre Agassi Larry king Armenian,,, you'll find it.

I notice alot of people are jealous that hes Armenian btw, they want to say hes Persian or something else, like they cant take it that hes Armenian.

                  Re: Andre Agassi, not Armenian!???

Hey guys, I'm actually new to this forum but I stumbled across this post while on google and it caught my eye. Can I first of all say how much I (as an Australian born from Iraqi-Assyrian parents) have respect for all Armenians because we are brothers and we have lived together for thousands of years and suffered with eachother. Andre Agassi however is half Assyrian-Armenian and half American. His father Emmanuel Agassian was born in what at that time was part of greater Armenia, however his ethnicity was Assyrian. Today this region is a part of Iran hence why Iranians tend to call him Iranian-American and Armenians tend to call him Armenian-American. Because Assyrians live in a diaspora and don't have an independent nation we tend to be split by the newly created borders. My parents were born in Iraq, but that doesn't make us ethnically Iraqi arab? I rarely call myself Iraqi. From time and time again we are solely recognized as only Iraqi christians (or even Kurdish christians at times) by the media but its nonsense. There is a fine line between distinguishing Assyrians from other Iraqi, Iranian, Turkish, Syrian, Armenian and even Lebanese people. It's all about Pan-Assyrian nationalism but we can go on and on about this topic but I can guarantee you 110% that his father is of Assyrian ancestry because he is well known in the Assyrian community and not to mention can speak in Assyrian pretty well as he is our family friend and my parents only speak Assyrian and Arabic. Andre has assimilated into the American way of life and now he is an American just as I am an Australian.

Is that what you are being proud of? By the way, I have friends who have grown up with Andre Agassi's father (a boxer) in Iran, and he is one hundred percent Armenian, what are you Assyrians always talking about?
