I have a problem??

Rachel, I think some of us feel more comfortable showing our uniqueness here. I am the same person here as I am in real life, but when I smile and nod in person, I argue here... lol

We get to choose names and avatars for ourselves that fit our personalities to show ourselves in ways more than what we say in discussion. Plus its easier to be silly on an online forum with a group of people youre used to than say in a class or at work...or even with family for some of us... Its nice that we can do this.

Listen, yes we Armenians like to gossip, yes we like to criticise each other, yes we like to put our noses into others' business. There are several other traits that are not that great. But goddamnit these are our traits and I for one love them, even though I dislike them, simply cause they are our traits. If you are affected by such things, you have entirely too much free time on your hands or too much free space in your brain (sorry if that was too harsh). Learn to filter such attitudes and behaviours. If you can't then you will have to move out of Armenian neighborhoods, but don't blame the Armenians, blame yourselves for not being able to deal with Normal Armenian traits.

I don't mean this in a bad way, but do you speak Armenian? If not was there a reason for it?

I am Armenian from Iran and I was almost 18 yo when I got here in U.S. Now it’s been 5 years I am living here with my parents. Don’t get me wrong but still everytime I see my cousins that were born in Iran and grown up here don’t speak, read and write Armenian it really makes me think why?

I don’t know why but I have this strong opinion that when I have kids they have to speak Armenian at home. So I still don’t understand how and why the new generation here does not like to learn and speak Armenian and makes me think and believe that I'm goanna have really hard time with my kids!

For example I was walking by an armenian women talking to her friends and I heard her say look at her that U.S. grown armenian she probably doesn't know armenian. I couldn't take it and i told her that she should really make sure that when she was talking about a person she should make sure the person doesn't know what they're saying.

If she does then she can talk to them and tell them in Armenian that she speaks Armenian too. Armenians can be really .... hmmm, well you know nosy, and I understand how bad it is to hear stuff like that

Do you think there is a reason that most new generation doesn’t like to speak and learn Armenian? And the fact that it keeps getting worse and worse? I think that can be the reason that most older Armenians are worried that in 20 years from now the kids might not even know Armenian. That's sad in my opinion.

Anyways to answer your question, I do speak, write, and read in Armenian. I do talk to them in Armenian. It's the fact that they say things behind someone's back and think that that person doesn't understand. I only talk Armenian with people I'm comfortable talking it with and that doesn't include every Armenian I know. I don't know some may consider that weird but it's just the way I am.

If a person makes fun of my accent in Armenian, I dont use it with them again - simple as that. I had no exposure to Armenian growing up, so obviously Ill have an accent when I try to speak it. There is nothing shameful there, and its really none of their business.

Rebel, please dont generalize. Many of us want to speak it and learn on our own. You discredit us when you put us in the same category as the ones who simply dont care. Its called assimilation - they are blending in with another culture and trading in their own. Not everyone is passionate about their culture. Its discouraging, but its a fact we must accept.

I really see it as a lack of appreciation for the culture stemming from a lack of intellect. I make an effort when I don't have to and these people spit on it. I'm sorry, I can't respect it. Thanks for the accent encouragement. I don't have a Russian accent in English, but in Armenian for some reason I do. lol Shnorhagalem

I see what you mean. I agree it is a lack of appreciation for the culture, but what are we gonna do? Can't force people to appreciate it we just have to deal with it. Your welcome =) I'm half Armenian and half Russian but for some reason I don't have an accent.
