I once saw a Hamshentsi on Myspace and she had a bunch of "1915 Never Again" genocide stuff on her profile. They're Armenian, just Muslimified.

...younger generations (particularly those with leftist leanings) prefer to identify themselves as Armenians. But because Armenians are Christians and Hamshenis are Muslims, they're not easily accepted.

haha ... im not happy about this but I still accept it as a fact ...some Armenians dont.. like the other day for example I was telling my aunt about the hamshenis and she like stopped me when I was talking and she was like no no this is absurd it dosent exist lol
I still accept they are Armenians but in my head it sounds so wrong they use the word hye...I guess if they said it in turk it wouldnt even bother me but the word hye ...its like taboo ( yes I know im a crazy nationalist )

Originally posted by CatWomanYeah, I read about the Hamshenis a couple of weeks ago actually... very interesting! Though, I still can't imagine Muslim Armenians... I mean, Christianity has played a big role in keeping us united and maintaining our identity and stuff, it's amazing that these people haven't yet assimilated and still consider themselves Armenian.
Here is more about them:
by the way, Dont make mistake They dont call themself as Armenian. And even some of them can attack you, If you call them armenian.
A Sad True.
wow, Tom I didn't know about these people. I'd be interested to know when they converted to Islam. I know religion is a personal choice, but for an Armenian to leave Christianity is a BIG SHAME. They probably converted under the threat of death. Not that it's a excuse.
Moronic, changing religion is not a big shame, and no They didnt converted with the threat of death. ottomans have not such problems much, after all a christian gives more tax than a muslim.

Gagauzs are a group of people who speak Turkish. They live at Moldovia at autonomous Gagauzia and they are Ortodox Christian.
Diaspora Armenians are a group of people who mostly doesn't speak Armenian. They live mostly at France, Canada, USA and their religion is whatever popular at where they live.

Is this thread really an accurate reflection of how Armenians treat religious freedom? If you convert from Christianity, you cease to be Armenian? Or is it only if you convert to Islam? There are Armenian atheists posting here - what do you guys think of them?
