I haven't heard or analyzed much rap, but I know that there are lyrics involved... As long as there's lyrics, there's room for mastery, don't you think? Sure, you can see it as a bunch of black guys talking in a monotone voice, and sometimes even yelling, but I'm afraid that's too much a generalization for my taste.

Just because it has lyrics involved does not mean anything. Have you even heard the lyrics? Have you heard of Snoop Dog's lyrics? This guy is so illiterate and has trouble making rhymes he has to reinvent new words in the wheel of ebonics to attempt to make a rhyme much less a lyric. He even had this horrible show called "Doggie fizzle televizzle" or something. But I digress, that is so very creative, hardly a generalization! Let's also not forget that most of what we know as "rap" gained its popularity from the streets, from black gangsters and thugs in Compton and other vile elements that had it been any other race of people we would have shunned aside but since they are black "Oh wow they are black, poor black people we need to give them some air time they have some important things to say!".

Funny you mention about IQ and rap, I do feel like I'm getting dumber when I'm watching channels like much music, and those rap videos, it's all part of the pleasant experience I guess :P
Again, I really don't mind the fact that everyone around me is stupid, all the more opportunity for myself. At the same time however, I resent the fact that we're treated like the scum we are really turning out to be.

I'm sure you don't, and I can see your point! I don't mind it either being surrounded by stupidity and simplicity, we will use hate sheep as an example.

So, there's no good rap then? Not one single example of something worth while? As there is underground artists for Classical music, there's underground artists for everything. It isn't fair to judge the metal scene today for example by watching it on television, because hardly anything portrayed to be metal by the mass media is any good, and often, it isn't even metal... You must be in touch with the underground if you want to learn anything about the actual music and the artists of this style, otherwise you're just feeding on the crap you're given at a jacked up price.

The same must apply to rap... Just because someone loves poetry and has a credible background in it doesn't cancel out the possibility that they might want to express themselves in rap, and this is why generalization is a harmful way to analyze the scene. It is the underground artists who we should be looking at, not the tv.

Well, I don't know if you've noticed, but I hate pointing fingers at people on forums... I prefer generalizing when it comes to people around me being stupid. It is unwise to call a stupid person stupid, as they will not respond in an intelligent way anyway. Therefore they are a waste of time, and it may be a stupid decision all together to mess with them (this would be in rl more than on the internet, but you get my drift).
