Turkish identity have always been there. Certain jobs and positions in Palace and certain govermental duties have always been given to Turks in Ottoman time. I dont need to mention about Seljuk's which is obvious.
Just two examples, Fatih Sultan Mehmet have sent a Ferman-i Humayun, to Uygur Turks back in 15th century. During Abdulhamid Han's period, Eastern Turkistan(Uygur Region) was part of Ottoman State, eventhough it was symbolic, for 20+ years Eastern Turkistan was part of Ottomans.
And one more thing contemporary Turkish flag was used by Ottomans.
To Cut in short Turkish identity have always been there, it was not invented out of blue moon.
