And he supported the idea of a multiparty democracy in the early days of the Turkish Republic, which is why Ataturk got rid of him (as in retire and shut up or I'll execute you). He spent most of the rest of his life under virtual house arrest.

What i mean liberal is just that and his Progressive Republic Party.
