- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

  • Hip Hop vs. Rap ...

It has come to my attention lately that I think ppl in general do not really have a good idea b/w the differences of Hip Hop and (C)rap. So in an effort to enlighten a few ppl about the differences I decided to make this thread. Also you could post your favorite hip hop OR rap lyrics, with all profanity removed of course, which illustrates your feelings on a particular topic. I'll probably get zero responses here but that's ok it's here just in case you feel the need to express yourself through someone else’s lyrics!

Just to start off Hip Hop is the fun and conscious mother to Rap music which is really just a tributary of the river Hip Hop. Rap as a tributary just takes, imo, the worst aspects of the Hip Hop culture and magnifies it to the point that all you see/hear about are the negative aspects. Like: killing; adoration of weapons; relegating female worth through negative rhetoric; supporting ignorance through the support of inferior education; glorifying drug usage and the sale of drugs to the point that every kid listening to this garbage wants to cook up a rock of crack and start "slangin" for a job; finally rap totally supports materialism above everything else said above with diamonds being the "ice" every aspiring criminal would like to own.

So what is Hip Hop? Well it can be all of that unfortunately as it is the root of Rap but the true purveyors of Hip Hop don't even mention the above topics and activities unless it's to illustrate a point of how wack Rap has become. Hip Hop culture has been defined as elemental ... MC'ing (MC = Master of Ceremony) Dj'ing and turntablism (turntablism is the art of making musical compositions from scratches ... full circle for Russo's Art of Noise Manifesto), graffiti (the good "burns" are the ones worth mentioning), and break dancing.

At the base of this thread would be Hip Hop supports "positivity" and Rap (read everything on urban radio) does the exact opposite ... anyhow I'll follow up this post with some more differences but right now I would like to share one of my favorite songs that although is not inherently positive it is neither negative in a Rap sense either. The song is Patriotism by Company Flow and it was originally released on Sound Bombing vol. 2 (Bombing = graffiti) on the Rawkus label. It is basically criticisms of America and our heinous federal government and huge corporations. I've been feeling sort of hateful towards the Fed as of late so that's why I am starting off with this song ... notice how much more complicated the rhyme structure is compared to what you hear on the radio. Also notice how profanity is used to a much lesser degree than in Rap lyrics in general.

I don't care about hip hop/ rap. At most I listen to a few things from that genre but that's it.

Otherwise I don't consider someone who is a rapper or in hip hop to have as much musical talent as someone in another musical genre.

Didn't I see this exact same thing on MySpace?

Anyway, I think people who say Hip-Hop is mild rap that doesn't have a lot of cuss words and gets more radioplay and Rap is hardcore gangster music that talks about guns are stupid.

Hip-Hop is a culture. Breakdancing, DJing, Tagging..

Rap is just the music the artists make. Enough said.

So you're calling me stupid? Thanx ... appreciate that.

I never said hip hop is the "mild" form of rap ... it's the mother of the art form that rap constantly takes from and ruins thanks to ppl like you. They are not the same as I already illustrated.

Rap is NOT just the music that artists make as rapping is predominantly lyrical and NOT musical unlike singing. Hip Hop is the music that artists create where rapping is the lyrical delivery. At the same time it is ALSO a culture (durh). All of this insightful nonsense coming from someone who considers themselves a "Rapper" (yea right) and NOT an MC (will never happen) shows me which way you're leaning.

If you peeped something on My Space about this topic then it's no WONDER as it has probably been written in a dozen other places as well. If you're suggesting I am plagiarizing then that's ridiculous.

I already stated the elements of hip hop so reiterating what I wrote and saying "enough said" seems repetitive and totally arrogant. Besides it's not enough said just because you, self proclaimed rap/hip hop aficionado for this forum say so.

Trust me you don't want to have a battle bro ... My turntablist skills vs. your supposed lyrics ... I'll leave you senseless. You don't even know the foundation and yet you're coming out with an album ... please. Go brush up on your lessons ... 1-3 preferably.

These next lyrics are dedicated to you courtesy of Lyrics Born from the album Later That Day

I wasn't calling you stupid. I was just saying, in general, when this case comes up, people who think that are stupid. I didn't even bother reading your first post - just dropped my two cents based off the title of the thread.

Lmao. I only skimmed through this second post, but listen. I'm not saying anything.

Did you make this thread to get opinions or did you make it to shut people off and just say you're right?

Well that's you're bad for not reading my/the original thread post and then responding to this thread, right?

Do you expect ppl to think that you're NOT responding to them? If you are misinterpreted then that's really your own fault for not making it clear that you were just expressing your opinion (i.e. imo). Otherwise it isn't hard to tell why what you posted was misconstrued. Stop me if I am wrong ...

And if you were just dropping in your thoughts then thanks ... still

Anyhow this was supposed to be a thread for ppl who actually enjoy One-Way ... like yourself, and obviously not Anon. Thought ppl could share their opinions on the differences b/w Hip Hop and Rap. I also thought that fans of the genre(s) could drop in their favorite lyrics (with cuss words omitted of course) that maybe express how they felt on a given topic like I did twice.

I imagine the lyrics will/should come from more conscious styles of Hip Hop because top 40 (c)Rap is really pretty shallow ... speaking of Shallow I'll drop off this verse from another one of my favorite Hip Hop artists Blackalicious.

            {{All the artists I've mentioned thus far are from the Bay area btw with the exception of Company Flow who are from NY. DJ Shadow, Chief Xcel, Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born, Lateef the Truth Speaker, and Latyrx all are part of the Quannum collective. They are all from Cali.}}

This next song is called Shallow Days and it is exactly the song that deals with the topic of Hip Hop vs. Rap. I actually should have picked it first but I was feeling more "antiestablihmentarianismish" from the get go. Enjoy ...

I just keep moving on... (moving on...)

Time and time, a brother asks why
The rhyme is not laced with a gangsta touch
I said "Simply because I don't live that way
Still kickin' them rhymes rugged and rough"
            "But that won't sell,
cause you gotta keep it real
            so that we can feel
            where you're coming from
Because these streets is ill so if you ain't
            killing ______ in rhymes
your whole sound's just bubble gum"
            I said "I won't contribute to genocide;
I'd rather try to cultivate the inner side
and try to evolve the frustrated ghetto mind
The devil and his army never been a friend of mine"
"But ______ don't wanna hear that ____" said the brother
Who was obviously totally misled and yelled out
"murder murder, kill, murder" instilled (and still?) in the influential
            Parts of our kids' heads

            Shallow days, you never wanna
Let a brother be a brother
Fully inner to the outer caught up
            In all them hollow nights
Can't escape cause everywhere that I look
People front, and it just ain't right
            [repeat]

I said "Don't you know the powers that be
are using people as pawns, devouring we (weed?)
until they see us all gone and outta the scene"
And as I passed the chronic, he said "look at where I be,
I tried to get a job for real,
but all the homies hit licks and rob and steal
and keep fat pockets caught in a rut to catch ground
this way's in, plus who could you trust?"
I said "I'm all about protecting mine,
but neglecting mines are getting left behind.
Why don't you change your environment?"
He said "This is all I know,
plus my fam's all that I got, I can't go"
I said "You gotta make it for the fams"
"____," he said "I didn't make the ghetto, The ghetto made the man"
I said "You're more than just that,"
Shook his hand, said "____, you gotta find a way
To break the devil's master plan, peace"

            Shallow days, you never wanna
Let a brother be a brother
            Fully inner to the outer
Caught up in all them hollow nights
Can't escape cause everywhere that I look
People front, and it just ain't right
            [repeat]

The word "peace" is just an expression
Used to say bye when it's time to jet
And them red black and green medallions (remember those??)
Were all just part of the trend, I guess
Hardly ever see them around brothers' necks no more
Instead of that gold gats inspiring gangstas and macks
Who at the young age of four
Are seeing more drama than war veterans
            Instead of learning God's laws
And hip-hop is a voice that we enlist that
To express how we be feeling about this and that
            But music does reflect life
And kids look up to what you're portraying and mimic what you act like
It's time for a new day and era in rap, conscious style,
Makin' them aware of the happenings
But their ears seem more steered towards self-annihilation
so then they might laugh and write this off,
like I'm out here just blowing wind,
maybe label us soft or unreal something they just can't feel,
while they keep yelling "murder murder murder, kill kill kill"

I just keep movin' on (moving on ...)
I just keep movin' on (moving on ...)

            Shallow days / hollow nights

Through this thread I am trying to build a case for Hip Hop being the positive force in music that most ppl do not see it as. The lyrics I post are designed to highlight the more conscious lyricists and perhaps guide others towards Hip Hop of some merit and integrity. Not trying to make ppl enjoy a style of music that they maybe do not like, but I am trying to show how hip hop can be more than the negative stereotypes ppl typically associate with it and also the uglier version Rap music.

Ok just thought I'd post some of my favorite Outkast lyrics that talk about perseverance (In Big Boi's first and only verse in Humble Mumble), being judgmental about Hip Hop and Rap in Andre 3000's verse in Humble Mumble, as well as some insights to how ppl perceive civil rights protests and their ultimate effectiveness (The game changes everyday so obsolete is the fist and marches/Speeches only reaches those who already know about it) from Andre 3000's same verse ...

One of the things I love about MC'ing/Rapping in comparison to singing is that good lyricists can cover a bunch of topics in the same amount of "space" or time which a singer could/can not do. Also if a MC decides to just talk about a singular given topic then they can generally dive a little deeper into the subject matter. Does saying less really mean you're saying more? Sometimes but not always ... in regards to these songs neither Big Boi or Andre really rap for that long yet they cover a laundry list of topics if for only a second.

Anyhow the other, 13th Floor/Growing Old in the third verse speaks of growing older ...

Conceive true deception multiplied a million fold
Visualize the yin and yang in a battle so intense

While we ask no reason for the misplacement of the season
look at the picture that's painted
Tainted as the mind who's blinded to the point
where Sodomites get all the rights
We fall for fights with fisticuffs
Get pissed enough to miss the bus
It disgusts me to see my folks run up on
I say stand up on deception of time all of Revelations
And recognize this mind and reality of horror

Oh like Liberty Bells yes them bullets keep on rangin
On fire like the Georgia mass choir we keep on sangin
                Bringin our folks closer together
cause they severed us from the get green
Light and we ain't gon' stop until we hit the big screen

So, we hit the stage and then we fly back to our nest
                Growing old

Like some eagles, people don't understand

Hurr hurr hurr ... you're sooo funny. If you don't like the style(s) then why even come in here? There is a name to describe the behavior you’re displaying. Starts with a T ends with two L's

Here's a question if Hip Hop and Rap are dead then why does, primarily, Rap still dominate top 40 radio? Maybe you're just wishful thinking ... or maybe you just are incapable of appreciating a musical style spawned from the African American community.

Do you like jazz? That genre is another African American created musical style unique in creation to America just like Hip Hop. Hip Hop and Rap can also be as technical to Jazz in a juxtapositional sense (i.e. sampling). The differences b/w the two are like the differences b/w a painting from the renaissance era and a modern collage. One is pure artistic creation the other has its foundation in the work of others. Big deal. They are each imo unique creations that w/o the work of each individual artist would have never become fabricated in the first place.

Besides most Hip Hop artists/producers these days have decided not to sample as much as they had once done. It's expensive, costly and even worse if a lawsuit ensues for improper clearance. Still I think the idea of combining older musical styles in small samples and snippets with new rhythms created from sampled drum sounds is pretty cool. The technology alone is totally sweet!

It's not entirely ignorant on the lyrical side either! Some artists do a respectable job with their patterns of speech, "rhyme time", and general rhetoric. Having said that a whole bunch fall way down on the "way side", no pun intended. Seriously there is like a ton of horrible MCs/Rappers whatever, they suck. Still not every person in Rock music is worth listening to and that sentiment carries over to every style of music.

Try to be open minded and don't let prejudice stop you from appreciating all the different things that life has to offer.
