Men may surpass women in some things, just as women surpass men in other things, but on certain levels it's very much a fact that men and women are equal and it's quite refreshing to see a guy who wants a girl he's with to be his equal. First of all, let's differentiate between respect, and what we mean by "equal". There is no such thing as "equality". Men and women by default are different, in mind body and soul ergo there is no similarity which would come from such a thing as equality. What do you mean by "his equal"? There are always differences whether in strenghts, characters, minds, capacities, intellects. Nothing in the world is equal. This was the basis of all these ideologies from Marx to the Civil Rights, etc., and it's surprising that no one has yet learned what this means.
