Georgians to renovate churches in Turkey according to bilateral agreement

Recently, reports have appeared in the Georgian and Turkish press regarding a draft agreement allowing Ankara to renovate three mosques and construct a new one in Georgia. In turn, Tbilisi will be given permission to rebuild four old Georgian churches in Turkey.

The Georgian press says that the mosques in question are located in the Samtskhe-Javakhk region of Georgia.

Hetq asked Samvel Karapetyan, a specialist in Armenian architecture and cultural monuments, what mosques are actually located in the Georgian region. He said that there was just one throughout Javakhk. It’s an 18th century mosque located in a walled fortress community outside Akhalkalak. Mr. Karapetyan assumed that this was the one slated for repair.

The expert said the others were probably located in the Akhaltskal district were more mosques are to be found, even though most were destroyed during the Soviet era.

Mr. Karapetyan believes that the Georgian authorities are interested in receiving Turkish money for mosque restoration.

He commented that Armenians should focus their attention on Tayk, where the Georgians want to renovate Armenian monasteries and present them as Georgian churches.

1. Immediate review of the administrative-territorial division of Samtskhe-Javakheti with the inclusion of Tsalka municipality.

2. Immediate review and amendment of the Constitution of Georgia amendment declaring Samtskhe-Javakheti Region Autonomous Region Naming "Javahk Autonomous Region."

3. Giving the Armenian language the status of regional language in Javakhk autonomous region and an end to forced assimilation.

4. Granting legal status of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia and return secularized Armenian churches, shrines and historical monuments.

5. Immediate cessation of police harassment in the province of Samtskhe-Javakheti-Tsalka cessation trials and prosecutions of Armenian activists edge.

6. Suppress all manifestations of creation of artificial obstacles and prohibitions on checkpoint "Bavra" state border, including the termination of policies to prohibit trafficking of Armenian educational and fiction literature.

7. Restoration at the official level of Armenian names in the province of Samtskhe-Javakheti-Tsalka in Georgia as a whole, including consideration of the return of local place names in the region, which existed in pre-revolutionary Georgia.

Azeri/Turk alliance now is fighting against us through Georgia.

Saakashvili’s methodic actions are intended to humiliate Javakh Armenian population, seize our churches and make territorial claims on Armenian-Georgian border issue. It vividly indicates that the Azeries/Turks ordered/threatened and paid him to do that.

To provoke/fabricate Javakh Armenian population uprising against Georgia and claiming that it is done by the “aggressor”-Armenia; which does the same with Azeries. Thus supplying Azeries with additional strong tool to “prove” their Arthakh claims.

I think that our government/president wishful thinking; that we should be patient with Saakashvili/Georgia, for a while, until the Arthakh issue is settled, didn’t work.

Saakashvili knows it, and he is going to augment the pressure to the point, that no human being, that has a little bit self-esteem, would bare it. I know that we are landlocked county, but I think he, for sure, will do everything to provoke Javakh and Armenian population, we have no chance to prevent it. Besides, US and EU didn’t allow them to close the borders, otherwise they had been doing it, long ago, under the Azeri/Turkey pressure.

You know, he was eating his tie; cowards are able doing everything unimaginable, if frightened properly by Azeri/Turks.

Now, I think, our president must declare officially about this to the world, UN, etc. and then start acting against them appropriately. I think at this point this is the only way to confront Azeri-Turkey-Georgia joint plan.

We need to do this now urgently, Saakashvili is ordered/threatened/paid to carry out the actions above, before the Arthakh issue settlement.

Be patient, kakashvili will piss of the bear again. Also, do not assume the world, i.e. west, would take Armenia's side. What incentive (do not say because we are right), do they have to support us when we do not have anything to offer them in return?

Armenia has oil, and even more natural gas but under the mountains. Oil would have to be trading at $250-300 before it would be financial profitable to explore and bring those deposits to the market.
