Hi group,
So much drama! I love it!
Below is a link to an interesting article on the study of Armenian genetics.
The scope of the article is Christian minorities in Iran, i.e. Armenians and Assyrians. The article is very technical, but in summary it says that although Armenians have lived in Iran for over 400 hundred years, genetically they are a homogeneous group, with little or no intermixture with nonArmenians. This goes to show that no matter where Armenians live, we have so far retained our genetic makeup. http://www.aina.org/articles/gdaicc.htm
Whether one's complexion is dark or light is irrelevant. As you all know, historic Armenian stretched out from Mediterranean to Black Sea, which means that our ancestors lived in different geographic area, and that's why we have variations in skin complexion and hair or eye color. Also, I think we might have mixed with our invaders as well. In that case, more power to us! The wider is one's gene pool the greater are his/her chances for survival.
I agree with IMHye, what matters is that we share the same identity, history and culture, and that what makes us Armenian.
Also, Armenia is actually in Europe, not Asia. There are sources that place Armenia in Asia, but they are outdated and inaccurate. Europe ends in the historic Western Armenia, and that's why Turkey is now claiming that because part of their country is in Europe, it should be accepted into the European Union.

Well everyone here is gettin bent all out of shape, for nothing. Some of the same people trying to claim their whiteness, discount other caucasians as white, which makes them hypocrits. Armenians are no whiter then Persians are, yet some try to claim we are, it is ridiculous. Secondly whether you like it or not, accept the fact, that many people, including most Armenians, or at least half living IN LA do not consider Armenians white. Just because you dont like that, does not mean you have to pretend it does not exist. I dont believe Armenians are white, yet it would be foolish for me to pretend, that some Armenians dont think they are white.
A far as that guy talkin about Pakistani looking Armenians, really get over yourself. There are plenty of them so called "pakistanis" lookin ones in LA. So why do you make fun of them, you think that makes you better then they are?
Actually the funny thing is, whenever I have brought, an odar to an Armenian party, no Armenians have ever spoke a word of Armenian to any of my "white" friends. Yet anyone middle eastern, or East Indian they spoke Armenian too, I wonder why this is?
Why are you so reluctant to actually agree with anyone here on anything? Armenian and I aren't rejecting the fact that many Arabs and Persians are white, we aren't saying anyone is whiter than anyone, so why are you generalizing just because a couple of people don't have their facts straight?
Now, about the Pakistani looking Armenians, I was talking about my personal experience, because Tom brought it up.... I'm sorry if this upsets you, but in Montreal, Pakistani looking Armenians are a sight to see, because they are hard to find. I'm not in touch with the Armenian community in LA, so forgive me if I say anything that upsets you.
I never made fun of the guy, and I don't continue to. Read the words I have written and think about them before blatantly putting words into my mouth...
About being white, I recommend you take a course on anthropology or something, it'll be an eye-opener for you.
Geez, all this fuss from everyone here is reminding me of what my father says about Armenians... Even when we all say the same thing, we fight. What the hell, this is chaos. Try to take your emotions out of this (not specifically addressed to you), so that we can actually discuss something as civilized people.
Wow, I didn't know there are Armenians out there who decide how "Armenian" you are based on skin color and other factors.
The ignorant ones do this.
Are you going to tell the darker skinned Italian he is not Italian? Are you going to tell the lighter skinned xxx he is not xxxish?
Also, why are some of you upset if people question if Armenia is in Middle East? Why are you embarassed? So what if it's considered in Middle East, or Asia, or Europe. Geography changes, it doesn't remain the same. Besides, it doesn't mean Europe or Asia is any better than the Middle East. We're all people.
I'm not embarressed, not ashamed... I just disagree... Is it so wrong to favour association with the Caucasus over Middle Eastern?
By the way, let me introduce you to a U.S. political term called The Greater Middle East:
The Greater Middle East is a political term used to refer to the Arab World together with Turkey, Iran, Israel, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Various Central Asian countries and the lower Caucasus (Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia) are sometimes also included.
This expanded term was introduced in the summer of 2004 at a G8 summit by U.S. President, George W. Bush as part of a proposal for sweeping change in the way the West deals with the Middle East. This initiative was outlined around the Helsinki Accords from 1975.
This is interesting, thanks for bringing it to our attention...
This political term doesn't consider our position in the world culturally or historically, but in a purely independant geographical sense that is used for purposed of practical generalization. I have no problem with this.
No, I'm not getting emotional. I'm glad you have knowledge of anthropological theories, and I'm glad to see you intellectually chose to use "white" as a social term, which is probably the most reasonable and less risk thing to do with the term.
I don't like the model of Dravidian Indians being classified as Caucasians however, that is absurdity. I agree with Pakistanis being classified as Caucasians though, however, the "whites" in the middle east are different from the "whites" in Central Asia and Pakistan, and it is rare to find those types in Armenian populations, so it is not fair to give them large representation for our people (well, maybe in LA it is... I dunno).
I agree with Armenians being closely tied genetically to Persians and Middle Easterners in general. I never denied this... I was trying to illustrate this point by suggesting a model for stratification of whites in the Middle East (in a region based sense), so to find distributions that get darker as they near the Saudi desert, in hopes of pointing out the similarities between olive with skinned Armenians and olive white skinned Arabs.
