This is not a tool to gain freedom, this is part of freedom.

Arda, for good Turks like you it is and I appreciate it a lot but let’s not be naïve.

This is a very powerful political tool. It is a win/win situation for Gull, and the timing is perfect. He looks very secular/democratic advocating for freedom of speech and Turkish right of expression which increases his popularity with the intellectual Turks. At the same time it shines a positive light on Turkey’s tolerance and human rights issues in the eyes of the world. The petition also is valuable ammunition when he confronts AG issue and the Turkish recognition when he faces other world leaders. He will look like he is doing all he can to promote democracy and freedom, he will be hailed as a champion; it doesn’t matter if it ends up not achieving much in Turkey. It will also increase his chances of more influence in Caucasus and cooperation with US and Israel which will make it harder for them to accept the AG bill in US. We call those brownie points, very important.

May is right if what I think he/she meant. Gull and Edrogan are playing good cop/bad cop. The oldest trick in the book, very impressive and well done. Turks are an expert when it comes to creating such illusions. This is why I never underestimate the Turks.

Again these are my views only, Gull could be very sincere in his attempts; something you never see in politicians.

Hey look, I made senior member without getting banned so far.

      • Turkish brothers and sisters, your freedom of speech and demonstration is inherently in your blood,no state has the right to limit and seize that, and for what....
"All truth passes through three stages:
        First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident."

          Edoman, dear friend,

I think you cannot see what is happening. Even to make a neutral comment about this petition like Gul did is a political suicide. And we have seen the consequences: A member of CHP, Kemalist so-called opposition party and all nationalists are questioning Gul's ethnical roots now. They imply he has Armenian blood in his mother's side.

I wuold not mention but it became a necessity. Yesterday, i had been in a meeting with leftist and some Islamist organizations. Guess what was the decision taken?

          - If an attack comes from police or state-motviated "civil" nationalists to Armenian population and their towns, self-defense groups will be formed to defend Armenians.

          Shall i continue?

Wow, Arda, that's a stance to take, and from a pretty diverse mix there, leftists and islamists. In this situation everyone is going to try to make capital out of it, that's human nature, politicians, fringe movements etc. will put spin and try to lever a more favourable position for themselves, fine.
But this decision taken, if more turks had taken a similar stand in 1915, this forum may not exist. Different days though, different days. The internet has been a primer for liberation in many countries, just as was television in East Germany.
My friend, Arda, I salute you. Good luck!

It can sound strange for you but in Turkey, it is not.

Let me sum you the situation in Turkey about ten years:

Kemalists (CHP), traditional nationalists (MHP), ultra-nationalist, nationalist-socialists, Kemalist-nationalists and some conservatives form a front.

Another front is liberals, liberal-conservatives (AKP), Marxists and other leftists and some Islamic groups.

The main failure lines are Kurd question, Armenian question and mostly army's role on politics and EU.

Whether you are a Kemalist or not; that's the question.

You'll always be a senior member for me Edoman Jan, just like the first day I met you and everyone else .

Coming back to point though ...

In this situation everyone is going to try to make capital out of it, that's human nature, politicians, fringe movements etc.
This happened here in Armenia as well. I can tell you things that would make you look at politics in a different way. It's not always the way it seems, trust me. Here I couldn't believe my ears when I heard about some of the political steps taken recently. They were unbelievable.

Anyways, let's wait and see. I'm not making any critical judgments yet.
THE ROAD TO FREEDOM AND JUSTICE IS A LONG ONE!

Are you sure your mother's side isn't Armenian, like Gul!
