I think the ethnic makeup is much more diverse in the states. I will look that up. And a growing part of the prison population of California are Armenians.

What I found very interesting were stats that our sociology professor presented to us last semester. Obviously, I don't remember the exact figures, but it went something like this.
In USA, black americans form 12% of the population, and 35 (or more, I don't remember) of the prison population.
In Canada, they form around 6% of the population, and 4% of the prison population.
Also, on the population density aspect, I will have to disagree. Most Canadians live in the Quebec City/Windsor axe, which is just as dense as the States. In fact, the crime rate is much higher in the aboroginal population, who are a small number on a very large territory (all that reaaally cold part nobody goes to).
