catwoman i dont think there is a word such as "vegetarianism" but i do see your main point and i have quick eating red meat and mostly i eat fish if i want meat... but there are vegetables that are as filling and as protein rich as meat, and yet they are HEALTHY! like for example eggplants, beans, peppers (green bell peppers), etc...
There are essential amino acids that your body needs that one can only get from meat. This attitude of "Oh I am suddenly enlightened and I will not eat meat" is annoying. Half of the world is subject to starvation and here we sing the hymn of vegetarianism ( yes, it is a word).
Prior to the Vegetarian Age, you had no choice, you had to eat meat. It has been an essential diet for man since existence. You forget that man is spiritual and animal, herbivore and carnivore. You are what you eat and how you eat is how you live.
i think we are all forgetting that prior to the age of mass farming of animals people didnt eat as much meat. and IF they did it wasnt mass produced and animals werent given hormones to grow faster; for example how is that the normal cow of 20 years ago gave a cerntain amount of milk a day, and now they give 10 to 15 times more? hummm hormones??? yes... how come a chicken only had eggs when it was the season, and now chickens mass produce eggs on a daily basis...??? hummm hormones...
so anony the people you speak about of hundreds of years ago didnt eat the TYPE of meat that we are eating today... and the fact of the matter is that only the rich had meat, the poor people's diet was mainly vegetables and fruits.
for example the dolma is a poor persons food and so are so many of the foods we eat today. what is the yogurt soup? the poor persons FOOD! do you think the rich person would forgo meat and eat yogurt? NO...
pizza is also a poor persons food, and they didnt put meat on it until it became the national dish of the US...
anywho, i think we should be careful about the meat we eat and no there arent any additional things that are in the meat that arent in other vegetables, and if there are any all i have to say is that the ARMENIAN people have survived on vegetarian food for thousands of years i think i can continue the tradition...

Armenian people and the 'Mediterranean Diet' as it is better known as consists of a lot of meat. Meat and grains. Just because people who didn't have the money to buy meat subsisted on diets without a lot of meat in them doesn't mean that they were healthier for it. In fact, they were usually plagued with illnesses that are common in people who don't get the nutrients they need in their diets. The simple fact remains that there are 8 essential amino acids that are found in rich quantities in animal meat and you can't just take a vitamin pill to gain these in your diet. It's true that some protein-rich vegetables have certain amounts of these amino acids but nothing that compared to what you would get from animal meat.

Sometimes I feel like people become vegetarian or decide that this is their cause because they want to seem like they are so noble to be giving up something they think is sooo wrong! There are readily available sources of meat and dairy products out there that don't come from chicken or cow factories and rather than give up meat it is very possible to keep on eating a diet one is used to without 'sacrificing themselves'. It is a matter of supply and demand and the more the demand for certain quality of products (like organic) increases, the less it will be necessary to have factories that keep chickens and cows in such horrible conditions. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad thing that people choose to speak out against certain things, as long as they adopt the practice completely, rather than doing it because it's the thing to do at the moment. Case in point: Pamela Anderson is known for speaking out against the inhumane practices of such chicken farms and is proud to be a vegetarian or whatever she is, but in the next picture she is wearing freaking Uggs, uglies, whatever those things are called. I guess someone forgot to tell her where sheepskin comes from. Give me a break!

Thanks siggie, never heard of morningstar before, but I found their website.
Sure. So far I've tried and recommend the following: The crumbles as a substitute for ground beef in whatever you want to make, corndogs, chik patties, buffalo wings, chik'n marinara, sausage patties, bacon, and grillers patties (like hamburger patties). Don't get the parmesan or whatever flavored patties, they're gross I've heard.
GardenBurger makes good riblets and Toffuti makes yummy yummy soy ice cream sandwiches (don't know what grocery stores have these, but trader joe's does).
Enjoy! Soooo good.

Fake meat scares me. A bunch of vegetables ground up should not somehow taste like meat. I'll stick to the real stuff.
