Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!)

1] What you CAN NOT post.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is:
- abusive
- vulgar
- hateful
- harassing
- personal attacks
- obscene

You also may not:
- post images that are too large (max is 500*500px)
- post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or cited properly.
- post in UPPER CASE, which is considered yelling
- post messages which insult the Armenians, Armenian culture, traditions, etc
- post racist or other intentionally insensitive material that insults or attacks another culture (including Turks)

The Ankap thread is excluded from the strict rules because that place is more relaxed and you can vent and engage in light insults and humor. Notice it's not a blank ticket, but just a place to vent. If you go into the Ankap thread, you enter at your own risk of being clowned on.
What you PROBABLY SHOULD NOT post...
Do not post information that you will regret putting out in public. This site comes up on Google, is cached, and all of that, so be aware of that as you post. Do not ask the staff to go through and delete things that you regret making available on the web for all to see because we will not do it. Think before you post!

2] Use descriptive subject lines & research your post. This means use the SEARCH.

This reduces the chances of double-posting and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Using the search function will identify existing threads on the topic so we do not have multiple threads on the same topic.

3] Keep the focus.

Each forum has a focus on a certain topic. Questions outside the scope of a certain forum will either be moved to the appropriate forum, closed, or simply be deleted. Please post your topic in the most appropriate forum. Users that keep doing this will be warned, then banned.

4] Behave as you would in a public location.

This forum is no different than a public place. Behave yourself and act like a decent human being (i.e. be respectful). If you're unable to do so, you're not welcome here and will be made to leave.

5] Respect the authority of moderators/admins.

Public discussions of moderator/admin actions are not allowed on the forum. It is also prohibited to protest moderator actions in titles, avatars, and signatures. If you don't like something that a moderator did, PM or email the moderator and try your best to resolve the problem or difference in private.

6] Promotion of sites or products is not permitted.

Advertisements are not allowed in this venue. No blatant advertising or solicitations of or for business is prohibited.
This includes, but not limited to, personal resumes and links to products or
services with which the poster is affiliated, whether or not a fee is charged
for the product or service. Spamming, in which a user posts the same message repeatedly, is also prohibited.

7] We retain the right to remove any posts and/or Members for any reason, without prior notice.

- PLEASE READ -

Members are welcome to read posts and though we encourage your active participation in the forum, it is not required. If you do participate by posting, however, we expect that on the whole you contribute something to the forum. This means that the bulk of your posts should not be in "fun" threads (e.g. Ankap, Keep & Kill, This or That, etc.). Further, while occasionally it is appropriate to simply voice your agreement or approval, not all of your posts should be of this variety: "LOL Member213!" "I agree."
If it is evident that a member is simply posting for the sake of posting, they will be removed.

8] These Rules & Guidelines may be amended at any time. (last update September 17, 2009)

If you believe an individual is repeatedly breaking the rules, please report to admin/moderator.

    Re: Origin of Armenian Surnames

Here's today's name forecast. Wanted to save these for CA but THIS is the zenith of evil, lol. Couldn't resist.

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING MATERIAL IS NOT SUITABLE FOR ANYONE AND ISN'T MADE UP. TURN BACK NOW OR MAY GOD BE WITH YOU!

    1. Kunemyan = F-uckyan
    2. Kakatikyan = S-hityan
    3. Amotyan = Shameyan (this isn't too bad compared to the other two, lol)

Now, can anyone find an explanation? I can't even with my great imagination

          Re: Origin of Armenian Surnames

If someone possesses a surname containing "Der" or "Ter" it usually signifies that this person has a priest in the family.
That explains what the last name Terkkunyan means perfectly ! Thanks, lol.

            Re: Origin of Armenian Surnames

Hi, I joined this forum recently. I have posted in other threads, unfortunately, I find most threads to be a few years old. Interesting nevertheless.
Saco wouldn't Kakat be top? as in mountain top? Sorry to spoil the fun for you. Armenian names were for the most part descriptive. Of a necessity because for quite some time Armenians went with only one name. The descriptive usually was tagged on by neighbors and not always complementary. And don't forget, names change due to pronounciation, language, etc.
Finally, I would appreciate if ALL Armenians kept their dignity. No matter the idiot, nor the crap posted, nor the language used. Please do not lower yourselves to their level. I've been reading just too much lately and I expect better from Armenians.

              Sasun jan,

First off, I am not having "fun"! I am disgusted inside although I must also admit that it's hard not to laugh. How could someone's last name be Kunemyan for example? Gomeshyan? xxxoyan? Etc.

Second off, I am a pure Armenian born in Armenia, both my parents are Armenian, I live in Armenia after lot's of travelling, and I think I know how to pronounce words and I know what Armenian names are like, how they were used, how they ARE used, etc. I didn't just blindly post these names...

Regarding Kakat ... no my friend ... GAGAT is what your talking about. Mountain top right? Here, it is Kkakkatikyan ... pronounced that way too. Hard to believe? Well believe it brother, it's real. There is no explanation so stop searching for one, lol. Some things are just freakin strange. And finally regarding neighbors doing this or that ... that's not very probable in most cases!

                Re: Origin of Armenian Surnames

Were does the myth come from there was a time that people had one name? I hear it all the time and believe me it's not true look at history and the names and there you will see what it the names were. Here in Europe people think they got a surname because of Napoleon? Who can they think that and don't look at their history

                  Re: Origin of Armenian Surnames

                  Saco my friend,

Please do not take offence! What I was trying to say is that pronounciations change, spellings change. I've travelled quite a bit and I've seen some odd things done to Armenian names, that's all. I've many Armenians in the US whose names were translated to English because the Judge at Ellis Island couldn't pronounce their names. Also, those immigrating to the west from Arab lands had to put up with mispelling of their names due to transliteration. I know 5 brothers with 5 different names none very complemantary when dissected. But, that was the only way they could escape from a war, and now they are stuck with those names.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I just give people the benefit of the doubt before I tear them apart. Especially Armenians. And please, Armenians having one name is not a myth. The second name was usually descriptive, or a connection to the father, i.e. so and so's son.
Saco, I do not doubt your pedigree for a minute. On pronounciations of Armenian origins I bow to your superior knowledge. But I ask you to consider all angles before you blow a stack because frankly it's not worth it. I don't know if I made myself clear.
By the way where does the IAN come from? Are we going to fight about this?

wouldn't there be a hyphen though? like Ter-Petrossian?

I take all you said into account before posting anything yekhpayr. Don't worry. Regarding your last line ... I don't/didn't tear apart anyone, lol. I love my people .... even though they've done some things that are beyond understanding

More or less ! And I'm not all that yekhpayr but when it comes to these names, I have personally met the people carrying them and even they were embarrassed when using their last names. Many of these names have come from books dating back more then a century. Imatsi Sasun jan, inchvor yes asumem, kapchuni vortegh, galisa miyain portsits. They aren't opinions and they don't come from my very broad imagination.

Kkakkatikyan for example belonged to an Officer in the Armenian Army. Don't know what happened to him (he's probably there now as well) but that was his last name. Imagine how much he got teased when he wasn't around?
                      ~
Terkkunyan belonged to someone I knew in India.
                      ~
Kunemyan belongs to someone in South Africa.

                      Etc.......

By the way where does the IAN come from? Are we going to fight about this?
Why ? I haven't been fighting with you so far bro. I hope that's not the impression I gave you. On the contrary, it's been fun having this conversation. Please continue. Regarding IAN, let's leave that for another thread, lol.

wouldn't there be a hyphen though? like Ter-Petrossian?
Some names aren't that way. Frankly speaking, in the case of Terkkunyan, it doesn't matter. Break it up or stick it together. The name remains the same.
