I checked out the etymology, very interesting how we construct our words to make "black bile" mean mélancolie!

You know this is where we should say Eastern Armenian is easier and more straightforward than Western Armenian. In EA, almost all the words are written just as they are pronounced.

For WAs, most is written the way it is pronounced as well. Except we pronounce things differently than EAs. But I will concede that WAs often find it a little tough to distinguish between Դ and Թ (both pronounced 't'), Գ and Ք (both pronounced 'k'), Բ and Փ (both pronounced 'p'), Չ and Ջ (both pronounced 'tch') and Հ and Յ (both usually pronounced 'h') Nevertheless, we manage

We should refer to Ancient Text to establish a single standard variant of the Armenian Language....... Western Armenian has much Turkish influence and Easter Armenian was warped during the soviet Era.

How are Western Armenians last names transliterated using Russian? I know Eastern Armenian names are transliterated "ya-en" so I'm assuming Western Armenian "ian" is the same way.

Not true. Just because some Western Armenians use some Turkish words or expressions when speaking or know how to speak Turkish does not mean the language has been influenced. This is an urban myth. Go read any Western Armenian text and find me a single Turkish word that is being substituted for an Armenian word. You won't find the "ishteh", the "nasil sen", the "cok guzel", the "efferim"... etc. You will find none, even for those dating to Ottoman times. Some (mostly the older generation, for obvious reasons) people using (useless) expressions while speaking is one thing but to say the entire language is influenced by Turkish is another and very wrong. It's like saying that Western Armenian has been influenced by English if you speak like this "So, inchbes es? I hope amen inch lav eh".

Eastern Armenian was not "warped", the Mesrobian orthography was warped. One thing that happened was the loss of իւ. This was eliminated and replaced with յու, which are two entirely different things. But beyond that, the language is pretty much the same.

Turkish words? How about saying distorted Persian and Arabic? Hope Ara doesn't get upset.

Yeah I should've mentioned. Iran survived the Soviet reform of the Mesrobian orthography so it's the last place where all Eastern Armenian speakers know and use Mesrobian only

Literature produced by the Armenian community organisations in the UK (and communications from the Armenian Embassy in London addressed to the Armenian community in the UK) are usually in 'pre-sovietised' (ie. Mesropian) Eastern Armenian.

thanks a lot that I was educated and graduated from Istanbul GETRONAGAN VARJARAN COLLEGE (1886- 2008 +). Reading the contributors remarks on armenian language and their questions make me thinking that in turkey we were lot a head from you all ,thanks god and thanks for our professors in Getronagan that enabled us to study armenian language,armenian history and armenian religion in depth. of course I have to mention MIHITARYAN, ESAYAN,PANGALTI,SURP HAC, equally have importance in educating armenian scholars their mother tongue, for brief information www.getronagan.org is worth to vizit .
