  • Re: Learning Armenian from Armenian people

    Hi Lucin jan, How have you been? I hope you're fine.

    I just have a couple of questions, if you don't mind

    I wanted to ask, what is the use of "թե"?. I have wondered about this because I see it being used in so many places and I guess it must have a meaning, but to me it seems like it bears no meaning. For example in "չգիտեմ թե ինչու", I know it means "I don't know why"...but why is the "թե" there?

    Also in "Նա գտնում է թե ինքը դառնում է", which I know it means "He finds he is becoming"...but why is the "թե" there? Or maybe I am translating it wrong?

    ---

    Also, I wanted to ask what is the difference and the use of the different forms I've found of "բոլոր"...for example "բոլորիս", "բոլորիդ", and "բոլորը", because I fail to understand when and relating to what I should use them.

    Hope you can me with this Lucin jan?

    Thank you very much!

      It's hard to explain when Armenian is my native language. "te" can roughly be equivalent to "or" but also have different meaning. "չգիտեմ թե ինչու" in this sentence "te" in a way connects "I don't know" to "why", there's not such thing in English as I know of. For "bolor" "is" refers to as a group (you included), "id" is addressed to group, "@" is more general but definite.

      I hope that makes sense. Again, I have very little experience of teaching Armenian.

                Hmm, sorry Haykakan jan, I kind of didn't get it.

                For example in "Giteq ardioq vor...", I know it means "Do you know that...", but why is "ardioq" there? And also I've found in dictionaries it means "whether, unless"...the problem is I don't get it as where I should use it or what it means in a given sentence.

                  Artiok in the example you gave shouldnt be there. People use in places it shouldnt be used. Artiok means realy in a form of a question for example "Artiok du es?"-"is it really you?" It never means unless to my knowledge.

                    ardioq = could it be.
                    Giteq ardioq vor = could it be that you know.
                    ardioq ov er = who could've been

                      Oh thanks Haykakan and Yedtarts, now it's more clear.

                      I read too much Armenian Wikipedia and I've found things that confuse me a lot, I also thought maybe people use them where it shouldn't be used, but like I just refrain from making conclusions by myself on issues I am not 100% sure.

                      Thank you a lot.
